Hollywood is abuzz with the news that there’s a Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes baby on the way.

Cruise spokeswoman Lee Anne DeVette told People magazine Wednesday, “Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited.”

The high-wattage celebrity couple began dating in April and were engaged in June; no wedding date has been made public. Cruise, 43, who is currently shooting “Mission Impossible 3” in Los Angeles, already has two children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, with Aussie ex Nicole Kidman.

ASHLEE: “SNL’ REDUX

It’s almost a year now since singer Ashlee Simpson’s most famous musical moment and she’s headed back to the scene of the rhyme. Simpson will perform on “Saturday Night Live,” the place where, last year, millions of viewers watched her limp off stage red-faced after she was caught with her mouth closed as her song “Pieces of Me” blared from a recorded vocal track.

“I think everything happened for a reason,” Simpson told MTV News. “I feel like I became a stronger person and I definitely grew from that situation. I really learned how to stand up for myself.”

Initially, Simpson blamed the band for messing up but later blamed her stomach. She said that an acid reflux condition led to her losing her voice that night and a decision was made to use the backup tracks to assist her.

On her new album, “I Am Me,” set for an Oct. 18 release, Simpson has two songs she said address the “SNL” incident. One’s called “Beautifully Broken,” the other, “Catch Me When I Fall.” Tune in for a night of redemption, possibly.

WORKING IT OFF?

Renee Zellweger walked away from her four-month marriage to country crooner Kenny Chesney but the Oscar-winning actress isn’t taking time to mope. The “Bridget Jones’ Diary” leading woman will star in a Hollywood remake of “The Eye,” a Hong Kong horror flick in which a young woman, after receiving cornea transplants from a dead woman, sees the visions of the donor. Japan’s Hideo Nakata is directing, and Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner are producing. Zellweger, of course, was Cruise’s flame in “Jerry Maguire.”

LOHAN’S TRAFFIC STORY

Lindsay Lohan is blaming paparazzi for her most recent car crash.

On Tuesday, the Mercedes-Benz-driving “Herbie: Fully Loaded” star had a run-in with a van on a West Hollywood street. Police say the 19-year-old actress and a female passenger were treated for minor injuries, while the van driver had “moderate” injuries.

It all seems like an ominous replay of Lohan’s May 31 accident, in which a photographer rammed her car. The shutterbug was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon after police said he deliberately crashed his car into Lohan’s.

Wednesday, Lohan’s camp took a cue from that crash: “This is another example of the paparazzi endangering citizens,” publicist Leslie Sloan told the Los Angeles Times.

But the newspaper quoted witnesses who said Lohan may have contributed to the crash, while the Associated Press quoted chatty idlers who said a vicious throng of paparazzi caused the accident.

The Times: “She was just flying down the street,” said Katherine Starr.

AP: “There were about 30 photographers outside covering the store,” said Lori Satzberg, 43. “The poor girl just was shopping and they were just like hounding her.”

Authorities say no fault has been established in the accident.
