LISBON – Union 30 Superintendent Shannon Welsh has named Monica Millhime as community resource coordinator for Lisbon Community School, Philip W. Sugg Middle School and Lisbon High School.
“Volunteers have been a valuable resource for our students and their educational program. As we strengthened our volunteer program in recent years, we began to realize the need for stronger connections with the larger community and asked ourselves how we could develop programs that would be beneficial to outside organizations as well as to our students.
“Monica Millhime, as our community resource coordinator, a position created through the use of existing resources, will help us develop those programs and connections. An example of a current program is one created by the Lisbon School Department, the Lisbon Police Department, the Lisbon Economic Development Office and local businesses.
“Students at-risk academically and socially are placed as employees in local businesses. Students must remain in school and out of legal trouble in order to remain employed. Businesses mentor the students, providing training and support along with the school system and the police department.
“Students, businesses and the larger community benefit from this type of program. We believe we will be able to develop more of this type of program with Millhime’s leadership provided as our community resource coordinator.”
“We also recognized a greater need for community involvement K-12. The community resource coordinator will help make connections between the needed support for students and the resources in the community,: Welsh said. “These resources will enable teachers to provide more opportunities for student learning in the larger community, requiring students to apply their knowledge and skills in a meaningful way in the real world’.”
Welsh added, “Monica Millhime provides the skilled, passionate leadership needed for such a position. She creates strong connections within the community and has the skills and energy needed to bring projects to fruition. We are pleased to have her as the dynamic force in this community resource coordinator position.”
