AUBURN – His name is Sammy, and no one knows where he belongs. Sammy is a 3-year-old Rottweiler, and on Wednesday he was undergoing surgery for a broken leg.

At the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, Steve Dostie and his colleagues were waiting to hear results of the operation. They were also trying to pin down exactly where Sammy came from. “We don’t know if he has an owner or if someone wants him back,” said Dostie, director of the Auburn shelter.

The dog was struck by a car Tuesday in Canton, Dostie said. An animal control officer brought Sammy to the Auburn shelter with a broken leg and scrapes. It’s there that he got his name. He spent Tuesday at the Lisbon Road Animal Hospital in Lewiston. It was then recommended that the dog be taken to Dr. Todd Gauger, an orthopedic specialist at the Norway Veterinary Hospital.

“It’s a pretty bad break,” Dostie said about Sammy’s busted leg. “The fracture is so severe, they had to repair it using pins and plates.”

Shelter officials will continue to search for Sammy’s owner in hopes of recouping some of the $2,000 cost of the operation. If that fails, they will seek a new owner for the dog, which is described as friendly and outgoing.

“He’s simply amazing. He was kissing everyone’s face,” Dostie said. “He’s a great dog.”

Sammy is expected to recover fully from the operation. Dostie said it may be a few weeks before Sammy is able to leave the shelter and enter a new home or his old one.

Anyone with information about the dog, and those interested in adopting Sammy, should call the shelter at 786-4713.
