FARMINGTON – Pick a peck of apples from Simpson Orchards or pick a pair of pumpkins from Robin’s Flowerpot on Saturday at the second annual Apple Pumpkin Festival sponsored by the Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association. Bigger than last year with more demonstrations and crafters, the event will take place rain or shine at the school.

Ongoing demonstrations will include cider pressing, a silversmith, quilting, rug-hooking and basket-weaving. Hand-blown glass, hand-knit products and many other crafts will be on display and on sale.

And of course, there will be food, including hot apple crisp with ice cream and coffee with homemade doughnuts. Baked goods and other edibles will be sold at an apple novelty table. The Mt. Blue High School girls’ soccer team will also have a lunch wagon and will be helping with children’s activities including a scavenger hunt, apple crafts, face-painting and apple identification. The Healthy Community Coalition will provide information on healthy eating habits and blood pressure screenings.

Between a 50-50 raffle and the sale of baked goods, the group hopes to raise $1,500 with the fund-raiser – twice what was raised last year – to give a much-needed boost to the capital campaign. The group needs to raise the remaining $85,000 of a total $105,000 needed to complete renovations on the building, which already serves as a food pantry but will also house meeting rooms and an incubator kitchen for home-based businesses and training.
