MONMOUTH – Sandra Ellen “Sandy” Pettengill, 65, a resident of Main Street, Monmouth, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, at her home with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Lewiston on Aug. 7, 1940, the daughter of Arland and Mabel (Chayer) Peare. She was raised on the family Peare Farm on Lower Street in Turner. She was a graduate of Leavitt Institute.

On Aug. 8, 1958, she married Gilbert Pettengill in Turner. This past August, they celebrated 47 years of marriage. She was a member of the East Monmouth Methodist Church, East Monmouth Ladies Auxiliary and Cochnewagan Trailblazers Snowmobile Club.

After her children were grown, she earned her associate degree in accounting from Mid-State College. She was employed as office manager at Capitol Computer in Augusta, retiring in 2001.

She was a loving, caring family oriented spouse, mom and “Mimi” (grandmother). She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved monthly family dinners, holidays and special traditions, camping, gardening, walks with her dog, Cali, and her daughters, cross-country skiing, hiking, kayaking, needlepoint, crocheting and spending winter months in Florida.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Julie Wright and her husband, Phil, and Wendy Douglas and her husband, Merle; four grandchildren, Chad Wright and his fiancee, Stephanie Morin, Brandon Wright, Leslie Douglas and her fiance, Joe Carr, all of Monmouth, and granddaughter, Lindsay Douglas and her companion, Vic Barr, of Lisbon Falls; a brother, Arland “Sonny” Peare and his companion, Doris Winchester, of Bucksport; her best friend, Bev Phillips of Monmouth; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Cali.

She was predeceased by a son, Scott Pettengill; parents, Arland and Mabel Peare; and a sister, Marlene Petersen and her husband, Charles.
