HARPSWELL – John H. “Jack” Cole, M.D., died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Harpswell.

He was born in South Paris on July 10, 1921, to Richard Guy and Ivy Marian (Edser) Cole. He graduated from South Paris High School in 1939 and from Maine Central Institute in 1940.

After serving in the Army Air Corps in England during World War II, he returned to Bates College. He met and married Dorothy Drummond Strout, and they celebrated their 59th anniversary on Sept. 21.

He continued his education at Tufts Medical School in Boston, with his internship and residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland and practiced in Madison, until deciding to specialize in anesthesiology.

The family moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1957. He was a board-certified anesthesiologist in Orlando, until retiring after 30 years.

He was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, the Florida Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists and the Country Club of Orlando.

He is survived by his wife, Dotty; his daughters, Pam Gaspary and Len of Ormond Beach, Fla., Cindy Smith and Mike of Orlando, Fla., and Martha Shephard and Steve of Springfield, Va.; niece, Ivy Thompson of New Mexico; nephews, Richard Ramsay of South Paris and Donald Ramsay of Norway; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his two sisters, Wilda Ramsay and Lucille Gillham.
