NEW GLOUCESTER – The fifth annual New Gloucester Community Fair will be held on Oct. 14 and 15 at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds on the Bald Hill Road.

The fair expands to a two-day event this year, beginning on Friday with a Southern-style barbecue at 6 p.m., followed by a parade of lights at 7:15 and concluding with live music featuring the Grassholes from 8 to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, the Remax hot air balloon will give tethered balloon rides to help raise money to benefit the “Lungs for George” campaign. George Carman is a 38-year-old local firefighter who will need a double lung transplant because he suffers from cystic fibrosis.

A three-year campaign launched in behalf of Carman aims to raise $300,000 to aid Carman’s family during the time of his surgery in New York City.

New Gloucester firefighter Scott Doyle, who heads up the fair and the Lungs for George campaign, says New Gloucester’s event is the last unofficial fair of the year in Maine.

New Gloucester now owns the former New Gloucester-Danville Fairgrounds, also known as Trotter’s Park, on the Bald Hill Road. The historic roots of the facility and community ownership now has inspired local planners to hold an old-fashioned fair with lots of local participation.

The Gray Lions Club on Saturday is hosting an antique car show and will award first-, second- and third-place prizes in each of 17 classes, and a special trophy for best of show. A spaghetti dinner will be held at the Gray Fire/Rescue building on Saturday evening.

Also on Saturday, a one-mile canoe/kayak race on the Royal River will be held at 10 a.m., and a “Best Baked” contest will be held at 11 a.m. Anyone may enter a baked good in the contest.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., live public safety demonstrations will include the Life Flight helicopter.

Throughout the daylong event, live entertainment will be provided by Wavelength, Contradance, the 7-Rates, Puttpouri Music, Ben Detroy’s Jon’s Band and Shantelle.

There will be games for children, crafts tables including community displays, and plenty of food. A live glass-blowing demonstration will take place. And, a climbing wall will be featured.

A fireworks display at 6:30 p.m. Saturday will conclude the weekend event.
