Thanks to the Sun Journal for printing the story (Oct. 1) about the two girls who were missing from school but who were found later. I would like to add that thanks should also go out to the school department. It is my understanding that the school contacts parents when a child is absent to discover the reason why. Following through with that policy alerted the mother, which enabled the Lewiston Police Department to respond so quickly and locate the two young girls.
Some parents may consider it an annoyance to call the school when they know their child is absent, but it helps the school. The school personnel would have fewer phone calls to make in the morning for absent children if parents would call in first.
We should be thankful that school personnel call to find out why a child is absent. This case is a perfect example of a policy in place to keep our children safe.
In other cities or towns, people should check their schools’ call policy and advocate for this policy if one is not in place.
