MEXICO – The cleaning solvents lurking in the basement, old paint in the cellar and brake fluid found in the garage can be safely disposed of at two household hazardous waste collections in Western Maine this month.

The annual event is sponsored by Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. Vouchers will be required at both sites.

Residents of Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Byron, Roxbury, Rangeley and Magalloway Plantation may bring household hazardous wastes to the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste transfer station in Mexico from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. A voucher allowing disposal of such wastes will be given to participants at the station.

Residents of Bethel, Newry, Hanover, Carthage, Hartford, Kingfield and New Portland may also bring household hazardous wastes to the Mexico site. But first, they must pick up vouchers, good for up to $25 in waste, from their respective town offices.

The Wilton Transfer Station on Munson Road will accept similar household hazardous wastes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

Residents of Chesterville, Farmington, Phillips, Temple and Rangeley Plantation must pick up vouchers from their town offices before bringing items to the transfer station. Residents of Jay may get vouchers at the Jay Recycling and Transfer Facility. Wilton residents may get them at the transfer station.

Residents in the AVCOG area may bring hazardous wastes to the Environmental Depot from 8 a.m. to noon on the first three Saturdays of each month from April through November. The depot is at 425 River Road in Lewiston. Vouchers are available at municipal offices.

Dozens of types of wastes will be accepted at the Lewiston, Wilton and Mexico sites, including bug sprays, oil-based paint, metal polish, herbicides, photographic chemicals and moth balls. A complete listing of accepted materials and other information on the collection sites may be viewed at www.avcog.org.
