GREENE – Clyde Stanley Libby, 94, a resident of Vermont Avenue, Greene, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 11, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born March 2, 1911, in Windham, the son of Richard E. and Flossie (Dawn) Libby. He was educated in Windham Elementary School and also attended Gorham High School.
On Oct. 11, 1936, he married Laura E. Foster in Greene; she passed away on Oct. 30, 1989.
He worked in the South Portland shipyard during World War II as a straightener. He also worked for Birch Mills in Westbrook and in New Hampshire, at the Kennebec Box, as a sorter in Gardiner and Hodgkins Lumber in Greene. He was also a caretaker of a racehorse, for five years he was a farmer at the Highmore Farms, he was road commissioner in Greene for five years and was the sexton for Valley Cemetery in Greene for many years. He also worked in the woods and put up 10 cords of wood each year right up to last winter.
He was a member of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department, having been the assistant chief for nine years. He was a member of the Greene Men’s Club. He also coached Little League in Greene. He loved the Boston Red Sox and saw both the 1918 and 2004 Red Sox World Championship games.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and dancing, right up until 2004.
He is survived by two sons, Joe Libby of Leeds and Duane J. Libby of Peoria, Ill.; six daughters, Marilyn Ward of Horseshoe, N.C., Edith Duprey of Greene, Flossie Obie of Lowell, Mass., Doris Wagner of Portland, Ore., Mary Libby of Mechanic Falls and Gail Libby of Louisville, Ky.; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Patty Libby; a son, Lauren Libby, in 2003; six brothers and two sisters; two grandsons, Michael and Joe Richard Jr.; a granddaughter, Tammy; a great-granddaughter, Bethany; and a great-grandson, Kyle.
