NORWAY – U.S. Border Patrol agents, with assistance from officers from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, arrested a Waterford man Thursday on a charge of violating his resident alien status.

Karim Theirry Baroudi, 40, was arrested without incident outside his home Thursday morning at 42 Cross St. in Waterford, said Lt. James Miclon.

Baroudi is in federal custody in Portland. He will be brought before a federal magistrate within two days, when bail will be set, and a hearing date scheduled.

Baroudi, who was born in France, moved to the United States with his mother when he was 1 year old, Miclon said.

Baroudi had been arrested five previous times by Oxford County deputies and Maine State Police troopers on charges of domestic assault, assault on an officer and misuse of a 911 system over a period of one year or more, Miclon said.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, Deputy Sheriff Brian Landis made some federal agency inquiries into Baroudi and learned of his resident status, prompting him to contact the Border Patrol.

“He never fulfilled his obligations to become a naturalized citizen. Basically, it came down to Baroudi bringing attention to himself by being accused of crimes such as domestic assault, assaulting an officer, misuse of a 911 system and numerous other crimes,” the statement said.

At the time of Thursday’s arrest, Baroudi had been out on bail from a Sept. 19 arrest for assault.
