SABATTUS – Traffic slowed to a stop on the turnpike Friday night after a tow truck collided with a trailer being hauled behind a pickup during the evening commute.

Nobody was hurt in the 6:30 p.m. wreck, but damage to both vehicles was heavy. The front of the tow truck plowed into a small trailer being hauled by a crew from G.A. Doughty, a construction company out of Chelsea.

The side of the trailer was peeled away, strewing debris and construction equipment onto the highway.

Roughly 50 yards away, the tow truck came to rest against a guardrail with the front end smashed and a sport utility vehicle dangling from its bed.

The crash occurred just before turnpike Mile 80 in the northbound lanes.

The driver of the tow truck and a construction crew from the pickup walked away from the crash unharmed.

Highway traffic came to a standstill moments after the collision.

Police and fire crews that responded began clearing debris from the road, and one lane was open to traffic.

For more than an hour, rescue crews remained at the scene, investigating the crash, clearing away wreckage and directing traffic around the site. Several tow trucks were sent to help remove the wrecked vehicles.

Maine State Police were investigating the cause of the crash later Friday night. Identities of the people involved and further details about the wreck were not immediately available.
