What the experts say:
Ray Thompson, energy audit specialist at Community Concepts, says the need for space heaters indicates problems with central heating that would better be addressed by upgrading the home’s central heating system and weatherization measures.
If you must use space heaters, Thompson says don’t burn kerosene or other fuels that emit carbon monoxide. Use heaters that run on electricity. When you do, don’t overload extension cords or electrical circuits. Also, don’t block air flow around them and keep them away from flammable materials. Never run a heater while asleep or away from home. Don’t use in a bathroom or near water. Make sure it is UL approved, thermostatically controlled and automatically switches off if it tips over.
