LEWISTON – The city will take resumes for a new fire chief through Nov. 28, according to City Administrator Jim Bennett.

Bennett said he hopes to offer the job now held by Michel Lajoie by mid-January.

“The chief has said he’ll work through the end of February, so that should give us plenty of time,” Bennett said.

On Tuesday, city councilors created a five-member committee to begin sorting through the resumes. That committee will include Mayor Lionel Guay, City Councilor Lillian O’Brien, a member of the city’s management team, a firefighter and a resident.

That group will select three top contenders for the job and pass them along to Bennett. He’ll make the final choice.

“The committee can certainly make a recommendation about who they favor, and I will take that under consideration,” Bennett said.

Lajoie announced his retirement in September, after 29 years with the department and 12 years as the chief.
