CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -Gov. John Lynch said he will work with the Legislature to implement a series of recommendations to tighten regulations on crematories in the state.
A special committee Lynch formed in February has given him several recommendations to try to avoid a repeat of discoveries at the Bayview Crematorium in Seabrook last winter. Bayview was not licensed and investigators found a decomposing body in a broken cooler and two sets of remains being cremated in one oven.
The committee is recommending that the state require crematory owners be licensed through the board that governs funeral directors and embalmers; set up safeguards to detect unlicensed crematories; require regular inspections of crematories; and strengthen its consumer protection laws to make sure the public has full confidence that cremations will be completed correctly.
