UPTON – Richard “Buster” Frost Williamson, 86, of Upton, died Oct. 17.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1918, to Esther and Harry Williamson in Newry.

He lived on the beautiful Lake Umbagog for most of his life. He lived productively as a Maine guide for more than 40 years, a selectman, member of the planning board and Upton school board member. He served his country in the Merchant Marines in World War II.

He was a woodsman and truly loved caring for his woodlots in Sunday River and Upton. Part of that love made him a steward of his land. Together with his wife and sister, Phyllis, he gave the Mahoosuc Land Trust an easement on 133 acres at Sunday River and an easement to Audubon Society of New Hampshire on 100 acres along the shore of Umbagog Lake. He wanted to make sure that the land would be protected from development and remain “forever wild.”

He and his wife ran Birch Point Camps on Umbagog Lake for 10 years.

He enjoyed gardening, picking berries and smoking fish, and loved to share this bounty with friends, often giving away more than he kept and visiting longer than it took to do the harvesting. In the past few years, he and special friend and buddy Dick Angevine of Upton enjoyed fishing and hunting. He taught his friend the fine art of beaver trapping.

In his semi-retirement, he spent his summers on Lake Umbagog and winters in Lake Wales, Fla., fishing and visiting with his family and friends. Seeing him with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends was a privilege.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia “Ginny”; daughter, Diane Williamson of Upton and Augusta; his sisters, Phyllis Stevens of Oxford and Doris Fraser of Bethel; granddaughter, Pamela Johnston and husband, Rhori, and children, Piper and Seaver, of Indiana; granddaughter, Michele Bouchard and husband, Rick, and children, Cameron and Keona, of South Carolina and Auburn; grandson, Richard D. Williamson of South Carolina; brothers-in-law, Nelson Hood of Auburn and Raymond Moulton of Kennebunkport; a daughter-in-law, Johanna “Joni” Williamson of Eddington; and several nieces and nephews.

His son, Dwight, predeceased him on July 8.
