LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine will hold a peace march and other events this week as part of the seventh annual YWCA Week Without Violence, a nationwide effort.

The campaign focuses on practical and sustainable alternatives to violence and creating a vision for a safer, healthier community.

The local events are:

Wednesday: March Across the Bridge, the annual peace march across the Vietnam Veterans Bridge as a show of support for eliminating violence from the community. Participants will gather at noon on the Auburn side of the bridge and walk to Veterans Park on the Lewiston side, where the mayors will present a joint proclamation. There is no need for participants to sign up.

Friday: Race Unity Dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the YWCA of Central Maine, the Wade Center, 130 East Ave. Multi-cultural performances and a buffet-style dinner will be open to the public at no charge. Pre-registration is required. People are asked to call 795-4050.

Saturday: Magic YWorld: The YWCA of Central Maine will host this first-come, first-served event for the first 80 participants.

The YWCA has worked collaboratively with the Sexual Assault Crisis Center, Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, Auburn School Department, Support Solutions, the Auburn School Department, Lewiston Police Department and the mayors of Lewiston and Auburn to present this year’s YWCA Week Without Violence.
