WILTON – A one-day collection of household hazardous waste will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Wilton Transfer Station.
Things such as old paint, used paint thinner, dirty gasoline and pesticides that homeowners will never use again are a household hazard. In order to dispose of these properly, many towns in the Franklin County area have teamed with the town of Wilton and Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments to hold the event.
EPI Inc., a professional hazardous waste contractor, will operate the collection from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the transfer station on Munson Road, off Route 2. Residents from all over Franklin County are welcome to clean their basements and garages and look under their kitchen sinks and bring unwanted or unusable materials to the collection.
Many of the towns in Franklin County and the surrounding area have raised funds to enable their residents to participate in the program at no cost. The towns include Wilton, Chesterville, Dixfield, Farmington, Jay, Kingfield, New Portland, Phillips, Rangeley and Rangeley Plantation. Other residents may pay at the door. The cost is $25 for up to five gallons of liquid or 20 pounds of dry material.
Participating towns are using a voucher system. Each voucher is good for $25 worth of waste. Wilton residents can obtain vouchers at the Wilton Transfer Station on the day of the event. Residents from other towns can obtain vouchers from their town office.
For event details, residents may check with their town office, transfer station or with the event coordinator, Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, at www.avcog.org.
