BRUNSWICK – The Theater Project will open its first show of the 2005-2006 season tonight. The Young Company will present “Tom Jones,” adapted from Henry Fielding’s comic novel and directed by Wendy Poole.
The show will run through Sunday, Oct. 30. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. The Young Company has high-school actors from the Brunswick-Topsham area.
This rowdy, raucous and romantic play concerns the adventures of young Tom Jones, a foundling and the ward of Squire Allworthy. Tom is deeply in love with Sophia and she with him, but her father has arranged for her to marry the squire’s sneaky nephew and heir, young Blifil.
The romance is discovered, Tom is banished and Sophia, with her maid, Honour, sets out to find him. They are followed by Sophia’s father, his sister, the squire, and Blifil.
All find madcap adventures on the road to London and meet with many strange characters. The amusing and unexpected solution to their problems captures the hilarity for which “Tom Jones” is famous.
