JAY – The veterans organizations of the communities of Jay and Livermore Falls joined together to form a Katrina Relief Committee to raise money for the victims of the hurricane.
Committee members include Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 Commander Palmer Hebert and Auxiliary President Lynn Dunton; George Bunten American Legion Post 10 Commander Normand Chabot and Auxiliary President Evelyn Chabot; Lane-Dube Amvets Post 33 Commander Dick Therrien and Auxiliary President Sheila Weed; and Sons of Amvets Squadron 33 Commander Joseph Groomes.
The organizations joined to raise $8,000 with assistance from many post and auxiliary members who volunteered their time for the fund-raising. Area residents contributed to make the effort a success.
The committee met on Oct. 13 to decide where the money should be sent to accomplish the most good. It was decided to send the money to Oprah’s Angel Network where 100 percent of the money will go directly to the victims.
The money will help to furnish homes being constructed by Habitat for Humanity with help from Oprah’s Angel Network. It was decided that this was the best choice because of the joint effort and the desire to submit a check from the whole group.
