LEWISTON – Charles McCloskey, 81, of 9 Tarr Ave., Lewiston, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, at d’Youville Pavilion.

He was born in Renovo, Pa., on Aug. 6, 1924, the son of Robert and Rebecca (Mertz) McCloskey, and grew up and attended schools in Renovo, Pa. He was a graduate of Renovo High School and being in the top 10 of his class, he received his diploma early so he could enlist in the U.S. Navy.

He was a 20-year retiree of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. Following his 20 years of service to his country, he attended the University of New Hampshire where he received his B.S. degree in business administration.

He then moved to Lewiston, where he worked for the Lewiston School Department as the business administrator until his retirement in 1985.

He married Carmelle Robitaille in 1955; she died in 1980.

He later married Rose Snyder on April 15, 1983.

He was a communicant of the Dominican Sisters Convent Chapel in Sabattus.

He enjoyed traveling, especially to go hiking in Ireland and the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps.

He is survived by his wife, Rose McCloskey, of Lewiston; his son, Steven McCloskey and his wife, Brenda, and their children, Jonathan and Michael, all of Kittery; his daughter, Karen Klein and her husband, Thomas, and their children, Lauren and Jasmine, all of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his sister, Helen Jernigan of Ridley Park, Pa.; his sister-in-law, Nancy McCloskey of Latrobe, Pa.; and his many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in the Robitaille and Snyder families.

He was predeceased by his parents; an infant sister; his brother, George McCloskey; and his brother-in-law, William Jernigan.
