This is in response to John Pehek’s letter, printed Oct. 13, wherein he states: “To date, there has been no specific evidence that withstands scrutiny to validate the intelligent design idea.” I could make the same statement regarding the theory of evolution.
Pehek admits that evolution has not been proven conclusively, yet the idea of evolution is taught as though it were fact. Evolution is not fact, but rather an idea. Intelligent design is also an idea, and, like evolution, it is suggested by real evidence. Should an idea be suppressed simply because it contradicts the status quo or because it cannot be proven conclusively? If so, then we could teach nothing regarding the origin of the universe.
There is something distinctly different about humanity that allows us to contradict nature. Where did this capacity come from? Where did the capacity to even ask questions of existence come from?
For the record, I believe God created the universe as a home for his children and that he has a special purpose for each of us. He has not left us without witness. In fact, he not only left his fingerprint in nature, but he has intelligently communicated what he wants us to know in the Bible.
