LEWISTON – Despite an 800-mile bus trip and a halftime lead, Oberlin College surrendered to the weather Tuesday.
The Oberlin field hockey team forfeited its game Tuesday at Bates College at halftime. The Bobcats were trailing 2-1 following a first half played during a downpour in frigid conditions.
“We have a very big game coming up on Saturday (vs. Wittenburg) that we have to win in order to win our league,” Oberlin coach Deb Ranieri said in a statement released by Bates. “We need to be as healthy as we can be for that game. It’s much more important than a non-league game for us.”
Oberlin (13-3) scored the game’s first two goals before freshman Rachel Greenwood scored for Bates (6-7) with less than seven minutes remaining before intermission.
