NEW SHARON – The New Sharon Fire Department recently received a $30,600 Homeland Security Grant for a new exhaust system for the fire station, Fire Chief Jeff Brackett said Wednesday night.
The all-volunteer department applied for the federal grant during April of this year, and Brackett said he was surprised and pleased to learn New Sharon had won the money.
“Any time we apply for a grant and get it, it’s exciting,” he said, “because otherwise we wouldn’t be able to afford” the much-needed exhaust system.
The approximately $32,500 cost, paid for by the federal grant and a 5 percent match by the town Fire Department, is “better than one year’s budget” for the New Sharon department, Brackett said.
The department is “taking bids right now” to find a contractor for the project, he said.
