Leading the fight against the law that offers certain protections to gays in Maine are three groups:
• Maine Grassroots Coalition
• Coalition for Marriage
• Christian Civic League of Maine
Asked for a list of supporters, spokesmen said the list includes member churches. In addition, the Coalition for Marriage’s Web page states that it specifically will not offer a list of supporters. The page says the group could list the 62,000 people who signed petitions against the law, which would be “impressive.” However, the page goes on to explain that no list is offered in order to protect supporters from being discriminated against.
