LEWISTON – Wilford “Bill” Eugene Leonard Sr., 75, of Poland, died Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

He was born in New Gloucester on April 18, 1930, and was the only son of the late Earnest and Ruth Farnum Leonard. He was a graduate of Mechanic Falls High School.

He joins his beloved wife of 52 years, Lorraine Cora Leonard, who preceded him in death last July.

Bill was well known in the Lewiston/Auburn area for having worked as a banker at the Casco Northern Bank on Minot Avenue for more than 30 years. He was also a member of the local Lions Club chapter. However, he was best known as the proprietor of the Summit Golf Course in Poland for the last 42 years.

Bill loved his golf course and most enjoyed doing the day-to-day maintenance, as much as possible, himself. He also loved slowly building more holes to his nine-hole course by developing what was once a lot of woods on his land into a hole complete with a tee, a green and either a pond or dog leg, all of which he designed himself. He received much gratification from the golf course and his favorite spot in the entire world was there, at the top of his eighth hole, with the very scenic views of the White Mountains.

Ever the sports fan, he was blessed to have lived to see the Red Sox win the World Series Championship in 2004 and the New England Patriots win three Super Bowl championships.

Bill will be sorely missed by his family, friends and the entire Summit Golf Course community.

He is survived by a son, Wilford “Bill” Eugene Leonard Jr., of Poland; a daughter, Mary Leonard of Boston, Mass.; three grandchildren, William Leonard and his wife, Shannon, and their four children, Brandon, Shian, Ashley and Sage, all of Rumford, Ryan Leonard and his son, Cole, of Oxford, and Heather Leonard of Kansas.
