FRYEBURG – The Frank W. Shaw American Legion Post 137 is planning the annual Veterans Day free meal for veterans, guests and veterans’ widows and widowers at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

More than 50 years ago, Post 137 World War II veterans began the Veterans Day supper to honor the veterans of World War I.

It has been nearly five years since the last World War I veteran, George Roberts, died, but the tradition of an oyster stew supper on Veterans Day continues to honor all veterans from all wars and services.

There are 47 current members of Post 137 on Bradley Street, with 35 paid up for life, meaning the post will remain active for quite some time. The veterans are active in the community through participation in parades and giving donations to local programs.

The Legion Hall is available to numerous causes, including fund-raisers, Weight Watchers, AA, town meetings and events, school and recreational use. Most recently it became the command post for the State Fire Marshal’s Office during the investigation of the Fryeburg Academy Gibson Gym fire.

Helping to keep the tradition alive are Mike McAllister, Doug Thomas and Tommy Hutchins. For more information or to volunteer, call 935-2225.
