Conference

PORTLAND – The second annual WIGout Conference for all Maine women will be held Sunday and Monday, Nov. 13 and 14, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. This year’s theme is “Spirit in Action.” It is sponsored by Women in God, Women in Good.

Open house

FARMINGTON – Girl Scouts of Kennebec Council will host an open house and sign-up opportunity to kick off the year from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at the University of Maine at Farmington’s North Dining Hall C.

The event is open to Girl Scouts and those interested in finding out more about Girl Scouts in their communities. Registration is in process for girls ages 5 to 17 and adult volunteers.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist with craft activities, answer questions, and provide information about Girl Scouting in the area.

Library awards

AUGUSTA – Maine librarians and library supporters gathered in late October at the annual Maine Libraries Conference to recognize their colleagues’ efforts to promote awareness and improve services of libraries to Mainers across the state.

The annual Outstanding Librarian Award was received by Linda Packard, director of the Guilford Memorial Library.

The Maine Library Journalism Award, which recognizes outstanding media coverage of libraries in Maine, was received by James Straub. Straub, a reporter for the the Ellsworth American, received the award for his article “Libraries Oppose Proposed Tax Cap.”

South Portland Public Library received the Maine Library Excellence Award for the 2004 adult summer reading program, which encouraged adults to keep reading during the summer.

Rottie day

AUBURN – Rottweiler Rescue Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Pet Quarters, Shaw’s Plaza, 600 Center St. Sponsor is the North East Rottweiler Rescue, www.rottrescue.org.

French is topic

ROCKLAND – Nomie Marciano, Penobscot School’s 2005-2006 French exchange teacher, will lead a workshop for beginners, “French for Travelers,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the school.

The fee of $108 includes materials, instruction and a traditional French lunch. For details and a scholarship application or to register for the event, call 594-1084. Preregistration is required and the workshop will be held at 28 Gay St.
