DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – The University of New Hampshire’s Alumni Association is working to fix an embarrassing error in its latest directory. The book’s list of deceased alumni incorrectly names 501 people who are very much alive.

UNH says the company that produced the directory named the alumni in an incorrect list.

“Does that mean I don’t have to pay my loans anymore?” chuckled Catherine Hansberry, 24, a 2003 graduate who is a kindergarten substitute teacher.

The company, called PCI, is reimbursing alumni who were listed as deceased and who bought a directory and also is calling and writing them to apologize. It is sending out a correct CD version of the book and an addition to the printed directory with the corrected information.

“The university feels terrible and has insisted that they rectify the situation as best they can,” UNH spokeswoman Kim Billings said.

J. Gregg Sanborn, executive director of the alumni association, said the error apparently happened when a PCI employee miscoded the names while inserting one of the many files it takes to put a directory together.

“The person, they have indicated, is no longer an employee of theirs,” Sanborn said.

The “I’m not dead yet” list even includes the wife of the alumni association president.

“I am not happy about that, but that was a mistake that was made, and its not a big one for me,” said Barbara Winch, class of 60 and wife of Carroll Winch. “I believe it was a mistake that is not fatal. I’m still here.”

One person on the list is actually dead. Francis Tate, 42, formerly a track coach for Nashua High School, died earlier this year. He was 94.
