SOUTHEAST, N.Y. (AP) – A five-hour standoff between police and a Connecticut robbery suspect ended peacefully at a motel on Saturday when he surrendered without incident.

The suspect, Christopher Warwick, 30, of New Fairfield, Conn., walked out of the Henry Van Motel and was taken into custody by state police. The drama began at about 11 a.m. when armed and armored police from several jurisdictions surrounded the area and evacuated patrons of a nearby restaurant.

“We didn’t know whether he had a weapon, but he has been known to carry weapons in the past,” said Lt. Michael Jankowiak of the state police barracks at Brewster. “In a situation like this, you don’t take any chances.”

No weapon was found after the arrest. New York state police did not have information Sunday about charges against Warwick.

State police Capt. Marty Hansen said Warwick was wanted on felony warrants by Connecticut state police in connection with home invasion robberies last week. He said investigators received information that Warwick was staying at the motel and contacted New York authorities after seeing his car parked at the motel on Saturday.
