LEWISTON – William A. Smith Jr., 88, of Hotel Road, Auburn, died Sunday, Nov. 8, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Born in Newport, R.I., on Oct. 28, 1917, the son of William and Rosaline (Tew) Smith Sr., he was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Edward Little, Class of 1937. After high school, he attended the University of Southern California.

On Oct. 18, 1939, he married the former Beth Virginia Pilsbury of Augusta. After college, he went to work in the South Portland Shipyard during the war and later took over the family business, The William A. Smith and Son Insurance Agency, which he operated until his retirement in 1985.

He was a lifelong member of the Calvary Methodist Church of Lewiston. He served as a member of the Auburn Sewerage District board for six years, serving as president at one point. He also was a member of the Androscoggin County Board of Insurance Underwriters and Agents, and a life member of the Elks.

Bill will be remembered as an avid sportsman. He was a longtime member of Martindale Country Club, was involved, along with his wife, in many bowling leagues and played competitive baseball and softball locally. He will be best remembered for his lifelong passion of fishing.

He leaves two sons, Norman P. and wife, Linda, of Auburn, and David and wife, Sherry, of Oxford; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his loving co-worker and companion, Natalie McCarthy.

He was predeceased by his wife in September 1991; his parents; a sister, Hazel; and a son, William A. Smith III.
