• Taxpayers may direct questions and concerns about new assessments to the Auburn assessor’s office at 333-6640. If officials there can’t answer a property owner’s questions, they’ll schedule a hearing with an assessor to review the situation.
• Tax rolls are online at the city’s Web site, www.auburnmaine.org/html/revalstart.htm. Residents can compare their values to those of neighbors or similar houses on the other side of town. People may then note any inconsistencies and bring them to a hearing.
• The city’s Web site also has links to state property-tax relief programs and exemptions that cut hundreds of dollars from tax bills. Those include the Homestead Exemption, the Tax and Rent Refund “Circuit Breaker” program, and exemptions for veterans, their spouses and the blind.
• The City Council will use the new values to set the city budget and determine property taxes next spring. Bills based on these values won’t go out until July 2006, and the first payments will be due in September.
