LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors will apply for a state loan to help pay for a $1.1 million construction project at the high school after voters gave their consent Tuesday, an official said Wednesday.

The money would pay for structural, roof and sidewall work and two additions.

The state will pay the bulk of the cost and cover the interest on a 10-year bond, paying about 91 cents on a dollar with the district paying 9 cents on a dollar, Superintendent Terry Despres said last week.

Once the state approves the bond, directors will return to voters.

“We have to come back to spend it,” Fred Nadeau, SAD 36 vice chairman said Wednesday.

He doesn’t expect the voters to face the question of spending the money until at least the end of January.

He is not 100 percent sure the district will have its application approved, Nadeau said, but “we’re far enough into the process, so we expect to get it.”

“I’m pleased that it’s finally starting to move forward,” Nadeau said of the projects. “We’ve been two or three years in the planning stages and talking about it,” he said.

Nadeau said he expected the referendum questions to be approved and “was very pleased” with the vote.

“It was larger than I thought,” he said.

Voters also gave concept approval to a performing arts center.

“We’ll start the process to see if we can get state funding to support it,” Nadeau said.

A design and engineering phase needs to be done and added to the district’s comprehensive plan, he said.
