AUGUSTA – In recognition of Veterans Day, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap encouraged Mainers to take advantage of services available to veterans and their families to recognize, honor and assist veterans. Veterans can get a variety of special license plates through the department’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles, some at no cost, Dunlap said Thursday in a statement.

Veterans’ license plate categories include: veteran, disabled veteran, prisoner of war and Pearl Harbor survivor. The newest plate is the disability special veteran plate, which permits the registered vehicle to park in spaces for the disabled.

Decals depicting certain military awards and branches of the military are available for use with certain veterans’ plates. The decals provide a more distinctive look and allow veterans to display a symbol of their service. An honorably discharged veteran may get up to three sets of veterans’ plates and decals. There is no fee for some of the veterans’ plates. Decals cost $2 per set.

For more information about veteran license plates and decals, people may call the Secretary of State’s office in Augusta at (207) 626-8400.

That office and all state government are closed today due to Veterans Day. Information may also be obtained online at www.maine.gov/sos.
