WATERVILLE – Ronaldo Y. Garand, 84, of Winslow and formerly of 214 Sabattus St., Lewiston, died unexpectedly Thursday evening at Maine General Medical Center shortly after arrival.

He was born in Lewiston on Sept. 25, 1921, a son of Octave and Exilia (Beauchene) Garand. He was educated at St. Mary’s school and was a drummer for the St. Mary’s Cadets and the Pastime Club.

He was a veteran of the military, having served his country for four years in the U. S. Army as a member of the 391st Infantry Regiment stationed in both Hawaii and Japan during World War II.

On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Paulette A. Labrecque, and together they raised two daughters.

He first worked for many years at Auburn Heel, spending the latter of those years as a foreman. He later spent 13 years working maintenance at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 22.

He was an avid fan of the Red Sox and the Bruins. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Paulette Garand, of Winslow; two daughters, Patricia A. Bickford and husband, Harvey, of Oakland, and Dr. Susan Garand and partner Michelle Morgan of Lansing, Mich.; four grandchildren, Shana Dumont, Dr. Travis Dumont, Hilary Crowell and Elizabeth Bickford; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and a nephew.
