Well, so much for tax reform. In addition to Gov. Baldacci’s drive against Native Americans having a casino, while bringing in Powerball (even though gambling is against the way Maine should be), now we have the much-awaited and promised tax relief here in Auburn.

The governor is to be congratulated. The scare tactics about the tax cap worked, and now most of my neighbors in Auburn are looking at a possible doubling of the current tax on their homes.

I find it hard to fathom that the city leaders, to use the term very loosely, feel that folks such as my disabled World War II veteran father and my 79-year-old mother can afford that much of a hike in their tax bills.

I would tell city officials that they should all be ashamed of themselves, but I do understand that that is impossible, because they are a shameless bunch of individuals.
