LISBON FALLS – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties will offer an 80-hour master gardener volunteer training starting in February.

The primary purpose is to train effective gardening volunteers who, in return, volunteer their time to help others be successful in growing healthy plants. Master gardener volunteers also serve as a resource for various horticultural projects in their communities.

Participants agree to volunteer 80 hours to community service projects. University of Maine Cooperative Extension specialists and other experts will provide in-depth training on topics as diverse as varieties best for Maine, how to prune trees and shrubs, how to establish and maintain home landscaping plants and lawns and grow successful vegetable gardens and fruit trees. Basics of plant care, pest management and soil management will also be taught.

There are a limited number of seats available and, after interviews, successful applicants will be notified of their acceptance. A fee covers basic costs of the course. A scholarship is available for a qualified applicant.

For more information and an application form, contact the Extension Office at 1-800-287-1458 or visit 24 Main St., Lisbon Falls, 04252.
