HEBRON – Hebron Academy’s football team has secured the Evergreen Football League Championship title and is headed to the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) DelPrete-Theobold Bowl Game this Saturday.
Hebron earned its first undefeated season in more than 10 years, and only its second New England bowl game bid in the last two decades, with a 22-14 win over over undefeated Portsmouth Abbey last Saturday. The Lumberjacks are 7-0.
The Lumberjacks will face St. Thomas More School this weekend. The game will be held at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA at 2:00 pm. More, an all-boys school in Connecticut, plays in the NEPSAC Class “B,” while Hebron is a NEPSAC Class “C” team.
“It’s been a tremendous season and our team is looking forward to Saturday’s game, which we expect to be a hard-hitting contest,” said Coach Moose Curtis. St. Thomas
During the regular season, the Lumberjacks outscored their opponents 167-41 and held three of them scoreless. After beating Holderness, Tilton, Pomfret, Proctor, Kents Hill, and Hyde to win the Northern Division of the Evergreen League,
Hebron traveled to Rhode Island to play the winner of the Southern Division, Portsmouth Abbey. The Hebron defense did an excellent job limiting Abbey’s scoring. The defense was anchored by lineman Grigory Frenk and Emeka Uwasomba, ends Jordan Krusch and Carmine Zegarelli, and linebackers Greg Gumbs, Charlie Pens and former Edward Little star Brent Miller. Miller, a tight end, is also the Lumberjacks’ leading receiver.
Defensive backs Algerson Andre, Ben Hall, and Steve Ramos did an excellent job against the Ravens’ passing game. Still, Portsmouth Abbey led 14-8 going into the second half.
In the fourth quarter, the Hebron offense had their biggest play of the game when Sean Smith-Vaughan completed a pass to Uwasomba for 74 yards, bringing them down to Abbey’s 6 yard line. Three plays later, Gumbs scored on a 2-yard run and Jordan Krusch kicked the extra point, giving Hebron a 22-14 lead.
With just three minutes left in the game, Abbey started their final possession at their own 25. Hall was able to knock the ball from an Abbey receiver on the third down and Abbey’s fourth down pass was incomplete
“This season, we’ve been lucky to have the right people to fill the right spots,” said Curtis. “We have several players with two or three years of experience at Hebron, who provide a solid foundation for the team. Our players work well together and they enjoy the game.”
