LEWISTON – Ruth E. Callahan, 92, of 55 Hillside Ave., Auburn, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 13, at Central Maine Medical Center with her family at her side.

She was born in Enfield, Mass., on Nov. 8, 1913, a daughter of Omar and Lily (Lisk) Downing. She was educated in Massachusetts schools and graduated from Belchertown High School.

On Dec. 24, 1939, she married Fred S. Callahan, and together they raised their only child. She worked as a homemaker.

She was a member and a very strong supporter of the United Methodist Church of Auburn. For many years, she was not only very active in the church but also in the Martha Circle Group, participating in many different activities and functions year after year. She was also a member of the Pine Cone Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Womens’ Auxiliary of the Frank Hullett Post of the VFW in Auburn. In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting and bird-watching.

She leaves her husband of 66 years, Fred Callahan of Auburn; a son, Harold and his wife, Diane, of Poland Springs; three grandchildren, Scott S. Callahan of Hudson, N.H., Nancy A. Callahan of Monmouth, and Sean M. Callahan of Arlington, Va.; two sisters, Gladys Cushing of Readfield, and Viola Leonard of Massachusetts; and two brothers, Walter Downing and Everett Downing, both of Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Lynch and Muriel Ames.
