MASSENA, N.Y. – Michael R. Whirley, 67, of Center Street, Massena, N.Y., and the Highland Nursing Home, died Thursday, Nov. 17, at Massena Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1937, in Auburn, the son of Frederick and Mary (Bilodeau) Whirley.

He was employed by Alcoa for 30 years, retiring on Aug. 1, 1996. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He married Alice Stone on July 7, 1962, in Auburn. They moved to Massena, N.Y., in 1966, when he was employed at Alcoa.

He was a lifetime member of the U.S. Marine Corps League, a member of Loyal Order of Moose 1110, past member of the American Legion Post 79, and AmVets Post 4. He enjoyed and loved spending time with his family and his pets, and watching sports.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; a daughter, Mrs. David (Faline) Colby of New York; a son, Jerome and wife, Deneen, Whirley of Virginia; two stepsons, Pierre Martel of New York and Ronaldo Martel of North Carolina; granddaughter and grandson, Mrs. Todd (Anastasia) Blanchard of New York and Briana Whirley of Virginia; a great-granddaughter, Jade Blanchard of New York; six sisters, Mrs. Paul (Doris) Webster of Florida, Mrs. Norm (Mary) Charpentier of Auburn, Georgette Cain of Lewiston, Patti Anderson of Florida, Margaret Whirley of Auburn, and Mrs. Carroll (Joan) Hebert of Auburn; two brothers, the Rev. Jerome Whirley of Poland, and Patrick Whirley of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
