WINDHAM – Police are looking for a man who crashed an Auburn woman’s stolen vehicle Friday and fled the scene on foot.

According to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Steven Lathrop spotted the suspect driving the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee at 2:17 p.m. Friday on Route 202, near the Windham/Gray town line. The vehicle had been reported stolen from the Portland area.

Lathrop signaled the driver to stop the vehicle. He did stop briefly, then sped down Route 202, turning onto Route 302 and heading toward Westbrook.

The release stated that Lathrop followed the SUV, but ended his pursuit when the operator began driving recklessly. Continuing on Route 302, he later found the vehicle abandoned near Vance Drive in Windham. It had struck a front-end loader.

The suspect fled the scene on foot and is still at large, according to the release.

Reached Saturday night, Sgt. David Hall said no description of the suspect was available.

However, he said, “I know they think they know who it is and that they’re hoping to make an arrest soon.”
