LEWISTON – Anton John Baumer, 87, of Lewiston, died Saturday evening, Nov. 19, at the d’Youville Pavilion.

Anton, known to his many friends as “Tony,” was born in Lisbon Falls on March 1, 1918, the son of Alex and Anna Meyer Baumer. He graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1935. During his high school years, Tony earned a spot in local baseball history, pitching a shut-out game against Lewiston High School. His effort lead Lisbon Falls to its last-ever victory over Lewiston.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theater in the 18th Armored Infantry Battalion. He served in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France, and the Rhineland.

In 1947, he married Therese Marie Gagnon of Lisbon. Most of their married life was lived in Lewiston where Tony spent most of his career in sales and merchandising for food-brokering companies, covering Maine and New Hampshire.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and an altar assistant at funerals. He was a member of the American Legion Post 158, Lisbon, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He always put family first, creating a supportive and fun-filled environment for his children and grandchildren. He worked endless hours building a lake-side camp and cherished sharing in the fun with his children, grandchildren and many friends at the lake’.

He was an avid follower of the athletic and scholastic activities of his children and grandchildren. In retirement, he was committed to exercise, visiting the health club for a daily swim and the pleasure of friendly conversation.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years; a son, Jeffrey A. Baumer of Lake Park, Fla.; a daughter, Karen Emmi and husband, Marc, of Watkinsville, Ga.; granddaughters, Sara Baumer, Nina, Mary and Megan Emmi; a niece, Duanne Smith of Lisbon; and two nephews, Peter Brie Baumer and Alex (Jack) Baumer, both of California.
