LEWISTON – A man suspected of robbing Northeast Bank on Lisbon Street on Monday afternoon remained at large after nightfall.

Police searched the area around Lisbon Street and East Avenue after the stick-up was reported just before 4 p.m.

Investigators said a lone man went into the bank at 882 Lisbon St. and handed a teller a note demanding money. No weapon was displayed during the heist and no one was hurt.

Police did not say how much money was handed to the suspect before he walked from the bank and disappeared. It was not known whether the suspect left the area on foot or in a vehicle.

At Northeast Bank, next to Martel Elementary School at Lisbon Street and East Avenue, a teenager walking through the parking lot said she did not see anyone running from the building or any other indications the bank had been robbed.

Detectives Steve McCallum and Lee Jones went to the scene where they dusted for fingerprints and examined video from surveillance cameras.

Later Monday night, police were still searching for the suspect. Sgt. David St. Pierre said the man was described as wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over a hat. He was wearing light colored pants at the time of the heist, St. Pierre said.

People with information – including those who were driving past the bank on Lisbon Street at the time of the robbery – are asked to call McCallum or Jones at 795-9000.

Police officers arrived at the bank from all directions while others searched nearby neighborhoods for the suspect. Several people were stopped and questioned but none proved to be connected to the bank heist, police said.
