LEWISTON – Informational meetings are scheduled for producers in the Upper and Lower Androscoggin River Watersheds who are interested in the new USDA Conservation Security Program, said Autumn M. Birt, district conservationist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties.
The watersheds were selected as two of the 110 watersheds nationwide for program signup. The purpose is to reward the best conservation farmers for their stewardship and motivate others to become good stewards of the land.
To qualify, farms will need to have soil erosion and water quality practices in place, including nutrient and pest management. Lands that are eligible include cropland, hayland, pasture lands and incidental forest land.
Those interested should call 753-9400, ext. 3, to reserve a spot at one of two workshops: Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Leavitt Institute, Route 117, Turner, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Newry Town Office, Route 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Contact the local NRCS office to get a copy of the self-assessment workbook or go to www.me.nrcs.usda.gov.
