FARMINGTON – Hilda T. Spencer, 88, of Strong, died Saturday morning, Nov. 26, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Dallas Plantation, a daughter of the late Coe Elwood and Lois Natella (Nile) Toothaker. She was a graduate of Strong High School, Class of 1934, and earned her R.N. in 1941 at Maine General Hospital.

On July 29, 1941, she married Frank E. Spencer at the Strong United Methodist Church, where she had been a member for more than 70 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and was a Sunday school teacher.

For more than 37 years, she worked at Franklin County Memorial Hospital and retired as director of nursing in 1978, when she and her husband became the year-round superintendents of Squirrel Island, off Boothbay Harbor, where they stayed for five years.

She was a 40-plus-year member of Aurora Grange 202 in Strong. She was a member of the Maine General Hospital Alumni Association in Portland, the Strong Senior Citizens and was a charter member of the Strong Historical Society. For three seasons, she served as the nurse for Girls’ State in Bangor.

She is survived by four sons, Barry C. Spencer Sr. of Jay, Brian D. “Tink” Spencer of East Wilton, Bruce E. Spencer and his wife, Doris, of Jay, Boyce F. “Doug” Spencer and his wife, Cindy, of Wilton; a daughter, Beryl A. Flagg and her husband, Randy, of Freeman; a brother, Roe “Toot” Toothaker of Sabattus; a sister, Glana Rodgerson of Houlton; 10 grandchildren, Angel, Barry “Buzz” Jr., Donna, Deborah, Cindy, Jodi, Bethany, Russell, Douglas “D.J.” and Morgan, several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of more than 53 years, who died July 1994; a sister, Gwendolyn Woodside; a brother, Coe “Chub” Toothaker; and two daughters-in-law, Virginia and Janine Spencer.
