NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A New Haven man charged with murder escaped from police on his way to court Monday, leaping from a two-story garage before being captured and hospitalized.

Christopher Brown, 21, escaped while being transported into New Haven Superior Court, police said. Detectives were trying to figure out how he escaped from what is supposed to be a secure garage at the courthouse.

During his escape, Brown jumped from a two-story parking garage to the street, State Police spokesman Sgt. J. Paul Vance said.

“Within 25 minutes, New Haven officers located him,” Vance said.

Brown was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Brown is facing a second murder trial in the June, 2004 shooting of Jason Craggett, who was gunned down outside his New Haven home.

Last month, Brown was convicted of first-degree assault and carrying a pistol without a permit for wounding his brother during an argument.

Ballistics tests indicated the bullets in the Craggett shooting came from the same gun.

But Judge Bruce Thompson declared a mistrial in the murder case murder case after a jury deadlocked.

Brown, who faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced Jan. 6 in the shooting of his brother, was charged Monday with escape from custody.
