BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Police detonated a small pipe bomb that was discovered in a neighborhood in a neighborhood overlooking the Winooski River.
Two apartment buildings in the neighborhood were evacuated while city police and the state police bomb squad were summoned.
A small pipe bomb measuring about 6 inches was exploded by members of the bomb squad using a special device.
The bomb was discovered by contractors who had been building an apartment building. Wind blew some of their construction debris into nearby woods and members of the crew came across the bomb.
“I’ve been working on this building for a month and a half and come to find out it was just sitting right there, right on the bank,” said James Dearmin, one of the workers.
Although the device was small, police said it could have been deadly. “If the device were to explode that fragmentation could go as far as a half mile away,” said Burlington police Sgt. Don Lilja.
Police have no suspects.
