EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Anne Marie McGuire is locked in such a bitter feud with the Girl Scouts that she won’t even buy their cookies.
The Girl Scouts have blocked her driveway with a split rail fence and a pile of boulders to stop McGuire and her brother from driving on Sperry Lane, the private lane that leads to Camp Murray, the Girl Scout camp. The organization has also sued the siblings.
The dispute started after McGuire and her brother each built a home seven years ago in back of their parents’ home on a lot that fronts the Girl Scouts’ private road. The siblings say while their homes were being built a town official arrangement for them to share the town’s easement, a claim East Haven officials deny.
Girl Scout officials said the years they’ve had to contend with parked cars and construction trucks on Sperry Lane as a result of their new neighbors. The Girl Scouts have asked for an injunction to prevent any trespassing, arguing the extra traffic poses a danger to the scouts.
“We have to keep the property safe,” said Jeannette Archer-Simons, executive director of the Girl Scouts Connecticut Trails Council in North Haven. “We cannot compromise the safety of the girls or compromise our right to the property.”
As a result of the roadblock, the siblings now use their parents’ driveway to leave their property.
Meanwhile, McGuire will not longer contribute to the United Way, a charity that supports the Girls Scouts, nor will she buy their cookies.
“It’s a running joke with my friends,” she told The Hartford Courant.
