OLD TOWN (AP) – A set of holiday greeting cards benefiting Special Olympics features a design by a 23-year-old woman from Old Town.
Molly Berry’s design featuring a drawing of a gold medal was selected from about 50 entries nationwide for the holiday campaign. The full set from card company Vista Print features 10 designs by seven Special Olympics athletes.
Berry, an Orono High School graduate, has won more than 20 medals during her involvement with Special Olympics. Although her favorite event is the 1-mile run, she has competed in soccer, basketball, ice skating, skiing, swimming and track and field.
“I try to train all year,” said Berry, who works part-time at Target in Bangor.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Special Olympics International, and funds from cards purchased in Maine will go directly to the program’s Maine chapter. VistaPrint has guaranteed a minimum donation of $75,000 to Special Olympics.
Proceeds in Maine will be used to help pay for housing during Olympic games, equipment and uniforms for athletes, venue charges, and coaches’ training for the state’s more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes.
