FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team closed the game with a 17-2 run to upset No. 17 Bates, 62-59 Tuesday night.
A driving layup with the shot clock about to expire, from Brandi Rideout gave the Beavers a 60-59 lead with 1:04 to play. Kari Simpson then iced the game with a pair of free throws before Bates’ last-second 3-point attempt.
Simpson led UMF (3-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. It was her second straight double-double.
Rideout and Karen Sirois each added 11 points. while Melissa Sawyer pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Bates (4-3) was led by Meg Coffin with 18 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Val Beckwith added 13 points, while Sarah Barton chipped in with nine point and 13 boards.
MMA 59, Husson 50
CASTINE – Julia Knights notched 19 points and eight rebounds as Maine Maritime edged past Husson posting a 59-50 victory.
The Mariners (5-1) held a slim two-point advantage at the half and played a back-and-forth contest with the Eagles, until the final two minutes when they pulled away.
Michelle Gott chipped in with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, and four steals. Valerie Robitallie added nine boards, eight of them offensive, and five points.
The Eagles (3-3) were paced by Carmen Ballard with 13 points and eight rebounds and Jodie Merchant with nine points.
Men’s basketball
Husson 86, MMA 55
CASTINE – Jordan Heath netted 24 points Tuesday to lead Husson to a 86-55 rout over Maine Maritime.
Phil White chipped in for the Eagles (2-5) with 20 points, while Tyler Muzzy added 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Brandon Hall led the Mariners (1-5) with 16 points, while Ryan Yeo tallied 11.
The Eagles held a 35-28 advantage at the break, then put the game out of reach with a strong 51-point second half.
